Large women's amulet disk (hijab), from the Baharia Oasis in the Egyptian New Valley. Much larger than the typical Egyptian Zar ornament and more naïve in its portrayal of demon figures, the symbolic origin of this piece is still unclear.
Unlike their Zar counterparts, these pieces are almost always larger and constructed from base metal rather than silver alloy.   |
